History of the LGBTQ Community in Amsterdam

On April 1, 2001, when the Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalize gay marriage, four couples were married by the Mayor of Amsterdam. But did you know that the city’s LGBTQ history stretches back to the medieval ages?

LGBTQ people have not only always fought for the ability to live and love as they see fit, but they have also played an important role in the development of the city and guided it towards the beacon it became.

This storytelling walk is a group tour that explores this history through the stories of individuals who lived it. Some of the stories are sad and some are uplifting. Some of the people are heroic and some are troubled.

Groups are entertained by storytelling and sites. Most importantly, you leave with a sense of the full breadth of LGBTQ history in Amsterdam, rather than thinking only of a couple of decades at the end of the 20th century.
